Background

In 1884, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie opened the first hospital in Port Arthur to meet the needs of the men working on the railroad. Since then, St. Joseph's Care Group (SJCG) has responded to the unmet needs of the community by changing over time and delivering new and innovative programs.

Programs and services are provided throughout the community and at 9 different sites, including: Balmoral Centre, Behavioural Sciences Centre, Diabetes Health Thunder Bay, Hogarth Riverview Manor, Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital, Sister Margaret Smith Centre, St. Joseph's Health Centre, St. Joseph's Heritage and St. Joseph's Hospital.

The Love of Christ has Gathered us into one

These facilities are operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie, sponsored by the Catholic Health Corporation of Ontario and managed by a local volunteer Board of Directors.

Strategic Priorities

SJCG's Board of Directors developed the following five strategic priorities to guide our activities and create focused direction for the time period of 2007 - 2011:

Core Values

  • Commitment
  • Compassionate and Holistic Care
  • Dignity and Respect
  • Excellence
  • Faith Based Care
  • Inclusiveness
  • Truthfulness and Trust

We are blessed with a wonderful group of staff who live out these Core Values each working day. Our philosophy of "Care, Compassion and Commitment" is what makes St. Joseph's Care Group different, and promotes the healing atmosphere that is apparent at all of our sites.

Clinical Programs & Services

Complex Care & Physical Rehabilitation Services

Complex Care and Physical Rehabilitation Services provide non-acute care services to persons with chronic and often fluctuating physical conditions or neurological conditions. Inter-disciplinary health care teams assist clients to maximize their best possible physical, psychological, cognitive, spiritual and social wellbeing. These programs are innovative and responsive to the needs of our community.

Mental Health & Addiction Services

Mental Health and Addiction Services provide a variety of client-centred, inpatient, outpatient programs, outreach and community-based programs. Clinical and support services are based on leading practices with a focus on psycho-social rehabilitation, recovery and harm reduction within an inter-professional, collaborative model of care. Partnerships with community and regional agencies within and external to the health care field are paramount in ensuring comprehensive and holistic services that are welcoming, accessible, comprehensive and coordinated.
