Older Adults Program
We offer specialized substance abuse and problem gambling programs for older adults (60+) designed to meet the variety of needs experienced at this stage of life. These include cognitive-behavioral groups using a strength based perspective and harm reduction strategies. Services can be offered on an outreach basis when requested and appropriate.
This Program
- provide a safe environment in which older adults can address addiction issues in the company of others
- provide education about the effects of alcohol, other substances and problem gambling on aging and health
- explore issues related to addictions for older adults - adjusting to changes in lifestyle, physical & mental health and in relationships with family
- support older adults as they make positive changes in their lives by building on personal strengths
- utilize a variety of treatment models and resources based on individual needs and Best Practice guidelines
Programs Offered
Assessment & Treatment planning
- Structured assessments covering areas of substance abuse, problem gambling and related issues
- Treatment planning based on client needs and resources
- Referrals and linkages as needed
Individual/Family Counselling
- Individual sessions are offered for a variety of related topics
- Couples or family counselling is provided to enhance knowledge and understanding of the issues
Day treatment
- Group education and/or treatment offered in a day program format
Residential Support
- Residential support may be offered in collaboration with our counsellors for older adults. Other options for residential group treatment may be arranged on an as needed basis
Continuing Care Programs
- Live and Learn sessions provide education on topics for recovery such as relationships, stress, leisure and spirituality. Open to family & friends.
- Men's Breakfast Club a bi-weekly group for older men which offers social networking, support and new skills for men who are working on maintaining change.
- Women's Support Group is a biweekly group for older women which offers lunch, discussion and support for making positive changes.
Education/ Training
Education sessions are offered for both individuals and family members on topics related to addictions/problem gambling and older adults. Workshops, presentations or consultation can be provided for professionals or the general public.
