Smoking
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act, S.O. 1994, c. 10 prohibits smoking tobacco in all enclosed workplaces and enclosed public places, as well as other designated places in Ontario, to protect workers and the public from the hazards of second-hand smoke. As of January 1, 2018, all Ontario hospitals will be smoke-free, this includes St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Use of tobacco products, including cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and other products made from tobacco or extracts of tobacco (e-cigarettes) is prohibited. This includes inside the building, on the grounds and in parking areas, as well as within personal vehicles while on St. Joseph’s Care Group property and vehicles used for employment purposes.
St. Joseph’s Care Group provides a smoke-free and tobacco-free environment, with the exception of areas not covered by this legislation, where smoking may be allowed in designated areas. This includes supportive housing, where smoking is only permitted in designated areas within the apartments and the community residences, and, outside designated smoking areas (e.g. at Hogarth Riverview Manor, St. Joseph’s Heritage, Sister Margaret Smith Centre, Balmoral Centre).
Smoking Cessation Support for Inpatients
Smoking cessation products and clinical supports are available to inpatient clients at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Clients are encouraged to discuss their options with a member of their care team.
