As a healthcare organization, St. Joseph's Care Group strives to provide innovative care that is culturally and physically safe, accessible, and equitable for all.
Working Together
As a client of St. Joseph's Care Group, you have the right to and are responsible for helping to create a respectful care environment that is free from discrimination, violence, judgement, and barriers.
Rights
As a client*, family member, substitute decision-maker or caregiver, you have the right to expect that every St. Joseph's Care Group employee, volunteer and contracted health service provider shall respect and promote your rights as follows:
- To be listened to and treated with dignity, courtesy and respect in a safe environment that is free from discrimination, harassment and acts of violence.
- To have a support person of my choosing present during appointments and when developing care plans or receiving treatment.
- To be recognized as an equal partner in my care and participate in goal setting to develop an individualized care plan.
- To have my physical, emotional, mental health, cultural, and spiritual needs acknowledged in care planning.
- To receive healthcare information in a format that is accessible, to make informed decisions about my care.
- To have access to Indigenous traditional medicines and healing practices.
- To be given privacy during treatment to the best extent possible, and assured that my personal health information is kept private and properly secured.
- To share feedback and/or make a complaint. To receive timely follow-up on concerns I provide and be assured my feedback will not negatively impact my care.
- To be provided an orientation to my care environment, that includes being introduced to the people involved in my care.
- To give or refuse consent to receive any treatment or service.
Responsibilities
Just as you have rights and expectations as a client, you also have responsibilities. Your responsibility as a client of St. Joseph's Care Group is to:
- Be a leader in your care or share/delegate this responsibility to your substitute decision-maker(s).
- Treat St. Joseph's Care Group staff and volunteers with courtesy and respect, without discrimination, harassment and acts of violence.
- Ask questions when you don't understand information provided.
- Provide honest and updated information about your contact information, health status, and medication to members of your care team.
- Respect the time, privacy, physical space, and boundaries of others.
- Follow safety rules and report any concerns you have to a staff member.
- Work with your care team to resolve concerns.
*Throughout this document we use the term 'clients' inclusively to refer to people receiving care in any setting, including residents and tenants.
