Nurses in Action: Celebrating Nursing Week 2025
Date: 2025-05-13
No matter the task, Alex is dedicated to supporting his patients and advocating for their needs. He enjoys the simple acts of care: "Whether it's pulling up covers or bringing a glass of water, I love making my patients feel safe and secure," Alex says.
Alex's journey into healthcare began after high school, when his mom suggested a job at Hogarth Riverview Manor (HRM) as a Resident Home Worker. He was unsure of his path at the time, but that quickly changed after his first day. "I absolutely loved it," he remembers. "I watched the nurses care for the residents firsthand, and I fell in love with it. That was the moment I really thought - 'I could totally do this.'"
During his time at HRM, Alex formed strong connections with residents and their families. It was the moments when new residents were happy to see him that made all the difference: "It was that sigh of relief they had when I was there...it was a very special moment that still carries over to me being a nurse."
Over the years, Alex completed placements in Hospice/Palliative Care at St. Joseph's Hospital and Ambulatory Care at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. These experiences deepened his understanding of the emotional and physical needs of patients at critical moments in their lives.
A recent graduate from the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) program at Oshki-Wenjack, Alex now works at St. Joseph's Hospital in Geriatric Assessment & Rehabilitative Care. His passion for learning continues to grow alongside his commitment to patient care. With plans to obtain his Registered Nurse (RN) certification in the near future, Alex sees continued education as a way to better serve those who rely on him. "St. Joe's has been amazing through all of it," he says. "They have a lot of opportunities in furthering my career, which is awesome."
For Alex, every step forward in his education is driven by the same goal that brought him into healthcare: providing comfort, dignity, and support to those in need. When asked what advice he would give to aspiring nurses, Alex shared: "It's more than just a paycheque - it's a lifestyle. Don't be intimidated; it takes time. Stay true to yourself and always have compassion."
On Nursing Week, we celebrate Alex and all the nurses at SJCG who make a difference every day in the lives of those they care for. Thank you for your unwavering care and dedication.
