In celebration of their one year anniversary, the staff of Sister Margaret Smith Centre, St. Joseph's Care Group, held a Time Capsule Ceremony on Friday, October 22, 2010.

It was an emotional ceremony one year ago as Sister Margaret Smith and Tracy Buckler cut the ribbon to officially open the new state-of-the-art facility. The staff and clients of the Sister Margaret Smith Centre have created a time capsule to remember their first year in the new building as well as preserving historical information about the program.

Tracy Buckler, President & CEO said "The new building facilitates the outstanding care and service provided to clients. We were very proud to receive the first-ever Diamond Level Clean, Green & Beautiful Award from the City of Thunder Bay for constructing the building to meet Gold LEED Standards."

A Time Capsule working group that included staff, youth and adult clients determined what items to include in time capsule. These items were unveiled at the Time Capsule Ceremony and will later be sealed and buried in the court yard.

A few items include:

  • A miniature rosary and cross from the corner stone of the previous Sister Margaret Smith Centre
  • Two poems written by a women's and men's group.
  • An autographed photo of Sister Margaret receiving the Order of Canada from Governor General, Michaëlle Jean
  • Commemorative Coin specially designed for former clients
  • Art card with history of St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing (which became SMSC)
  • SJCG 2008/2009 Community Report
  • Memory Stick containing electronic documents and pictures chronicling the building from the Sod Turning Ceremony to the Official Opening.

The new location of the Sister Margaret Smith Centre on Lillie Street is shared with Hogarth Riverview Manor and the future site of the Centre of Excellence for Integrated Seniors' Services.
