Small Fire extinguished Outside Sister Leila Greco Apartments Results in Minimal Disruption to Tenants

Date: 2020-06-03

Just before supper on June 2, 2020, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR) responded to a fire at Sister Leila Greco Apartments on Lillie Street.

Through a swift response from St. Joseph’s Care Group employees and TBFR, the fire was quickly extinguished.  It was contained to a small portion of the building’s exterior where Sister Leila Greco Apartments adjoins The Link.

Tenants did not have to evacuate and there were no injuries. TBFR remained on-site after the fire was extinguished, using fans to remove the lingering smell of smoke from the buildings.

“The safety of tenants and residents is our primary concern, and we are grateful that there were no injuries or need for evacuation. Our staff and the TBFR did a tremendous job, responding quickly and professionally to the situation,” said Tracy Buckler, President & CEO, St. Joseph’s Care Group.

The fire was likely caused by the careless disposal of a cigarette butt in the area that is clearly marked as a non-smoking zone. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas on St. Joseph’s Care Group property.
