Volunteer Award Honours Judy Mostow

Volunteers are the heart of our community and an essential part of the care we provide at St. Joseph's Care Group (SJCG).

Every April, we celebrate National Volunteer Week (April 16-22) to honour our valued volunteers who contribute in so many ways within our organization. One way that we recognize our volunteers is by presenting the Sister Dolores Turgeon Mission Award to an outstanding volunteer for their contribution to SJCG. This year, we are very pleased to present this award to Judy Mostow.

Judy's volunteer journey at SJCG was set in motion after she experienced a stroke in 2005. On completion of a year of outpatient therapy at St. Joseph's Hospital, a member of Judy's care team invited her to attend Moving on After Stroke (MOST), a support program for stroke survivors and their care partners. Judy graduated from MOST and was immediately invited to volunteer with the program. She passionately dedicated her time to MOST for the next 13 years, bonding with survivors as they experienced a similar journey to her own.

Overwhelmed with gratitude for the care, support and blessings she received along her journey, Judy has continued giving back by volunteering widely across SJCG for 17 years. Judy has been an integral member of many committees, councils, and initiatives. Some of her notable work includes:

• Participating in interview panels for leadership roles in the organization;
• Spending time as a Wayfinder, helping clients and families navigate to the supports they need;
• Supporting the Volunteer Services Advisory Committee;
• Assisting with the Client and Family Partner Program; and
• Organizing the Client and Family Council, of which she is a founding member.

All who have had the opportunity to work with her recognize Judy's thoughtful and dedicated contributions. "Judy is a volunteer, a mentor, and a friend to so many," said Kim Callaghan, Director of Communications, Engagement & Client Relations. "With quiet strength, Judy has made positive changes for people by sharing her experiences and insights with staff and leaders to improve our programs and services for current and future clients. It is an honour to learn from Judy, and humbling to recognize her work and impact through the Sister Dolores Turgeon Volunteer Mission Award."

"When one door closes, another would open," said Judy, reflecting on her time as a volunteer. "The door keeps opening to me. I keep being asked if I would be willing to volunteer, and it's been an amazing journey. It's been so rewarding - my life is rich and blessed because of all the doors that have opened to me. I can't give back enough."
