Teachings from the 2025 Gathering of Wisdom Keepers Now Available
Date: 2025-08-29
Earlier this year, St. Joseph's Care Group's N'doo'owe Binesi and Elders Council (Ogichidaa Onaakonigewin) hosted the fourth Gathering of Wisdom Keepers of Healing Niiwin in Thunder Bay (Animkii Wekwedong), on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabek and Fort William First Nation.
Over 80 people took part in this meaningful two-day event, including Elders, Traditional Healers, Indigenous doctors, cultural leaders, and community members. Together, they explored how Indigenous and Western health systems can work in respectful partnership - and how we can continue advancing Truth and Reconciliation, especially Call to Action #22, which calls for the integration of Indigenous healing practices into Canada's healthcare system.
Key themes included:
- The connection between land, spirit, and Traditional Healing
- Ongoing challenges faced by Traditional Healers
- Building respectful bridges between Indigenous and Western approaches to health
- Mentorship for youth, policy improvements, and creating culturally safe spaces
A full report and accompanying podcast featuring 5 of the participants are now available, offering firsthand insight into the stories, teachings, and recommendations shared during the Gathering.
