Compassion in Action: Research Partnership Focuses on What Matters Most
Date: 2025-11-19
The University of Calgary has announced Dr. Shane Sinclair as Canada's first Cross-Country Chair in Compassionate Care - a five-year initiative that will help healthcare organizations strengthen compassion through research, education, and practical tools.
Why It Matters
Evidence shows that compassion improves healing, deepens trust, and enhances wellbeing. When people feel understood, valued, and genuinely cared for, their experience of health care is better."Compassion is fundamental to health for clients, for their families, and for the staff who provide care because it fosters connection and strengthens wellbeing," said Janine Black, President & CEO of St. Joseph's Care Group. "We are proud to partner with system leaders and the University of Calgary in supporting Dr. Shane Sinclair as the Cross-Country Research Chair in Compassionate Care. Together, we are advancing research that will shape care experiences and deepen healing and connection across Canada."
It is a collaboration that will deepen our understanding of compassion in action and guide how we continue to grow it across Canada. Funded jointly by St. Joseph's Health System, Covenant Health Canada, and St. Joseph's Care Group, this work is a reflection of our shared commitment to a more compassionate health system.
