Date: 2012-11-28

In recognition of World Diabetes Day, St. Joseph's Care Group's Diabetes Health Thunder Bay Program, held an Awareness Walk and Open House on November 14, 2012, at their new location at St. Joseph's Heritage, 63 Carrie Street.

World Diabetes Day is celebrated on the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin together with Charles Best in 1921. Each year, World Diabetes Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about diabetes and how to prevent serious complications of the disease.

Diabetes Health Thunder Bay is a program of St. Joseph's Care Group (funded by the North West Local Health Integration Network) that provides diabetes education and counseling to prevent and manage the condition. Services are available to all residents of Northwestern Ontario. Diabetes Health Thunder Bay works with many community partners and other health care organizations towards a common goal of diabetes prevention and management.

Tracy Buckler, President & CEO, SJCG says, "We know that proper management of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, can improve a client's quality of life and prevent or delay the onset of diabetes-related complications. Unfortunately, in the North West, there is a very high incidence and prevalence of people with diabetes. Diabetes Health Thunder Bay provides people essential education, skills and support to be successful in managing their condition."
