COVID-19 Outbreak Declared Over at Hogarth Riverview Manor

Date: 2020-05-15

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) and St. Joseph’s Care Group announce that the outbreak at Hogarth Riverview Manor (HRM) is now over.

On May 2, 2020, one staff member at HRM tested positive for COVID-19 and an outbreak was declared. Provincial policy states when one staff or resident in a long-term care home is positive for COVID-19, an outbreak is declared. The outbreak can be declared over when there are no new cases after 14 days of the last shift worked by the staff member.

Prior to the outbreak, significant measures were in place at HRM to reduce likelihood of transmission of the virus within the Home. Expanded precautions, including isolating residents for 14 days, were implemented for the duration of the outbreak. Over the last 14 days no other staff or residents at HRM have tested positive for COVID-19, as confirmed through follow-up surveillance testing.

“We are pleased that the outbreak is now over. I am proud of our staff at HRM who are working very hard to ensure our residents are cared for in a safe manner, all the while keeping well themselves,” said Tracy Buckler, President & CEO of St. Joseph’s Care Group.

“Residents of long-term care homes are a vulnerable group when it comes to COVID-19,” said Dr. Janet DeMille, Medical Officer of Health. “Through the measures that were already in place and the additional precautions that were added, further spread of the virus in the home was prevented. This is the best possible outcome”
