Wiidosem Dabasendizowin: Walking With Humility - Embracing the Teachings of the West - 2026 Progress Report

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we remember the children who never came home from the Residential School System, honour Survivors and reflect on our shared responsibility to continue the work of Truth and Reconciliation.
As part of that ongoing work, St. Joseph's Care Group is sharing our Progress Report on Wiidosem Dabasendizowin: Walking With Humility - Embracing the Teachings of the West
Walking With Humility is a long-term strategy that shares our commitment and continued journey toward culturally safe, Indigenous-led care. It has been eight years since the plan first launched in 2018, and progress has been made across our strategic priorities.
The teachings of the West remind us to reflect and learn from the path we have already taken and carry that forward into our next steps. Guided by the teaching of Dabaadendizowin (Humility), this stage of our journey invites us to look inward, recognize what has been accomplished and remain accountable for the work ahead.
Over the past year, milestones have included welcoming the first youth members to Ogichidaa Onaakonigewin (Elders Council), opening the Shaabode'wan Teaching Lodge and enhancing Voluntary Self-Identification to help Indigenous clients connect more quickly with culturally appropriate supports. Across the organization, Indigenous cultural safety continues to be woven into policy, governance, quality and safety.
Throughout this journey, SJCG continues to be guided by Ogichidaa Onaakonigewin and N'doo'owe Binesi, our Indigenous Health division. At the heart of the work are Cultural Practitioners, Elders, clients, families, staff and community partners who continue to build relationships grounded in respect, trust and accountability.
