What is Seniors' Supportive Housing?

Supportive housing are apartment buildings that also provide support services to tenants. Support services assist tenants with daily living tasks so that they can live independently in their own apartments. Supportive housing staff are on-site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and can provide assistance with:

  • Personal Care
  • Bathing
  • Meals
  • Medication reminders
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Social Activities
  • Outings
  • One to one support

Services are provided based on the level of care required and can be increased or decreased as necessary.

Who is Eligible?

Eligibility for Support Services is determined by an assessment. Non-Profit Supportive Housing is for seniors whose family income does not exceed the maximum allowable amount. Please call to find out the current amount.

At this time, PR Cook also has units available that are unsupported. The application process for these is direct to PR Cook Apartments for market rent, and to Thunder Bay Social Services and Administration Board (TBDSSAB) for rent-geared-to-income.

How Much Does Supportive Housing Cost?

There are two fees for tenants of supportive housing. One fee is for the apartment rent and a second fee is for support services:

Rental Cost

Rent varies depending on the type of unit you are renting. Rent price includes, heat, hydro and basic cable television. Parking is available for an additional fee. Tenants are responsible for their own telephone and internet.

Rent Geared to Income (RGI) assistance is available by applying through District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB).

Support Service Cost

Support service fees help cover the care outlined in your assessment and include one meal per day in our dining room. Packages can be adjusted to meet your needs, and additional service hours are available if required. Fees are adjusted annually.

How to Apply

You can pick-up a copy of the application form at the front desk at St. Joseph's Heritage. Completed applications can be returned to the front desk or returned by mail.

If you require the rent-geared-income (RGI) subsidy, please complete an application with the District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB). Applications are available at their office at 231 May Street South and on their website https://www.tbdssab.ca/housing-homelessness.

Life Enrichment programs are a very important part of the Support Services Program. Through these activities we strive to create an environment where tenants are treated as individuals and are provided with a sense of belonging and control over their lives. Tenants can chose from a variety of recreational, educational, therapeutic and social activities to fulfill their own needs and interests. The purposes of these activities are socialization and companionship, choice and control, normalization and individuality.
